Your family is specialized at gathering a natural wild product. Either the things are hard to get and require lots of searching, or your family has exclusive rights to gather in a certain area. This is a seasonal profession, so you often do something else during the time when your product isn't available. Some gatherers also farm their product (such as seaweed).

Here are some examples of various products that are gathered.

  • Clams - many species
  • Herbs - rare medicinal herbs in particular
  • Loach scooping - scooped from the bottom of shallow waters with a colander. This fishing method also gave rise to a humorous folk song and dance, Yasugibushi. (Note: I'm not even sure if loaches were ever even gathered this way. But in this world they are! :D)[1]
  • Bamboo
  • Mushrooms - matsutake mushrooms in particular
  • Seaweed - different types by region for various purposes; most common are kombu, nori, and wakame
  • Pearls - Ama (海女, "sea women") are famous Japanese divers that collec pearls, though traditionally their main catch is seafood.[2]
  • Wood[3]
