Most gaijin are tough and smart; they have survived a long, hazardrous journey.
Most common Gaijin in Mythic Japan are Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, or English. Less common are various ethnicities from Southeast Asia, Russia, and Mongolia (some mongols are sumo wrestlers - as they are now, but historically they werent; but again, this is Mythic Japan). You can even be Swedish or Finnish; they often worked on European ships as sailors. Basically, you can be from anywhere in 16th-Century Mythic Earth, if you can explain it. GM must approve.
Chinese and Koreans rarely have this background.
