With the feat, you begin with six language slots. You can select languages from Standard and Rare Languages, as well as from Yaranaika-specific languages. Note that "Common" doesn't really exist in this world. It is replaced by Latin and Chinese.
Most translators are first and foremost fluent in Japanese and Latin. You are able to speak and understand Japanese, and read and write it using hiragana.[1]
Reading and writing kanji takes one language slot. You can also read many chinese characters, but not fully understand the text. Learning hanzi (chinese characters) would take another language slot.[1]
Learning a language written in Latin script includes the ability to read and write it, since the alphabet is very simple.
You can do Simultaneous interpretation[2], but it requires Concentration and is exhausting.
Most common foreign languages are Chinese and Portuguese. Second most common are Spanish and Dutch.
Most common Standard Languages are Common Sign Language (Japanese variant), Draconic, Giant, Dwarvish, Sylvan, and Elvish, in this order.
Other languages: Ainu, Okinawan, English, French, Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Odia, Malayam, Punjabi and over 400 others), Mongolian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and so on. Characters don't usually know Ainu or Okinawan unless they lived in the areas where they are spoken.
This background gives you three skills, to compensate for the lack of combat abilities.
